Wilbur's accident

Wilbur is a 2-year-old cat who was recently treated at The Woodbridge Vets. Sadly Wilbur was hit by a motorcycle and sustained near-fatal injuries, including a pelvic fracture, a dislocated hip and sacroiliac (SI) luxation.

Sacroiliac luxation is a serious and traumatic injury in cats that occurs when the sacroiliac joint, which connects the pelvis to the spine, becomes misaligned, causing the pelvis to effectively separate from the sacrum. This type of injury is particularly challenging and requires immediate intervention for repair.

Both our veterinary surgeons Dr Laurie Barrow and Dr Simon Culmstock were called into action for Wilbur’s procedure, which turned out to be both complex and lengthy. His post-op recovery required a spell of out of hours inpatient care which our amazing nurses were only too happy to provide. This meant we could keep him on-site, providing continuous and consistent care at our practice - as well as update and reassure his worried owners as often as possible with photos and videos of him.

Lauren and Elodie, two of our dedicated nursing team, took it in turn to stay with Wilbur overnight on three occasions as he required intensive care and regularly administered pain relief (as per the vets guidance) during his recovery from surgery.

Wilbur's recovery

We couldn’t be more proud of the dedication and all round expertise our team demonstrated in managing such a critical case and it has all meant that we could give Wilbur the very best chance for a smooth recovery.

We are pleased to inform you that Wilbur has been having regular rechecks appointments with Simon, and we are all very happy with how he is now healing up and the progress he continues to make!
